Last night at Chelsea’s. I stayed there by accident. It was actually good. Some songs were really country. Some were really blues. Some were really Southern Rock. Basically it was like seeing Widespread Panic, just not as good. But still… glad I stayed.
At the LSU Parade Grounds. It wasn’t as good as the time I saw them at Chelsea’s. But still… I love that band and had a great time.
I also ran into the guy who now lives in my old bedroom AT THE EXACT SAME MOMENT as I ran into the girl who used to live in that bedroom before I moved in. We had a discussion on existentialism. Not really - we just all shook hands.
By the way, I got to see these three Louisiana musicians play together at Chelsea’s a couple of weeks ago and it was almost life changing. Oddly enough, two days later I was getting coffee at Perk’s and ran into Simon Lott and spoke to him for a few minutes. He’s the nicest guy ever.
Heartless Bastards at the Varsity. Loved it.
Opening: Peter Wolf Crier and Builders & Butchers. Also excellent. In fact, I may have enjoyed the opening acts better than the headliner. Builders & Butchers’ percussionist is David Fuller’s twin brother.
Luke Ash at Chelsea’s. Also, a Soup Named Stu, with the always entertaining David Loti.
I’ve seen some other bands in the last couple of months but I can’t remember who.
Holy mother of god was this great.
Here’s the setlist, as best as I could write it down:
1) One Big Holiday
2) Gideon
3) Off the Record
4) I’m Amazed
5) Magheeta
6) (no idea. I think it was a new song. I did some Internet research and it may be called Friends Again. However, it did sound slightly familiar so it may just have been off Evil Urges, which I’m not that familiar with)
7) Golden
8) What a Wonderful Man
9) Lay Low
10) The Way he Sings
11) Wonderful (The Way I Feel)
12) (Don’t know, but it was sung by Carl Broemel who apparently has a solo album available for free on the interwebz)
13) STEAM ENGINE!!!!!!
14) Smoking From Shootin’
15) Run Thru (ending)
16) Touch Me I’m Going to Scream Part 1
17) Anytime
Encore
18) Wordless Chorus
19) Carnival Time*
20) Dancefloors*
21) Move On Up*
*with Preservation Hall Jazz Band
By the way, Preservation Hall Jazz Band opened and they were incredible. But they were even more incredible when they joined MMJ for the encore.

I also saw Papa Gros Funk and the Funky Meters. All I can say about S&G is this: I cried. I cried a lot. It was beautiful and perfect. Art Garfunkel made me cry.
The next day I went to Festival International in Lafayette. Saw: DL Menard, Chiwoniso, Nation Beat and Mucca Pazza.
I HIGHLY recommend Mucca Pazza. Srsly guys. But not as much as Simon and Garfunkel.
Saw them at Chelsea’s. My coworker’s wife bought me beer. Hadn’t danced like that in months. Glad I didn’t stay home.
Saturday, January 30.
Highlights:
Della played an acoustic version of Jumpin’ Jumpin’.
Prom Date covered 99 Luftballons with David Fuller singing the entire song in German.
In spite of the cold, glad I went.
Awesome, awesome, awesome, awesome, awesome.
A few notes about the setlist:
It was the fifth time Phish ever played Soul Shakedown Party.
Jesus Just Left Chicago hadn’t been played in 90 shows, and only once since June 2000.
It was the first time Dixie Cannonball and Gone were ever played.
Corrina hadn’t been played in 100 shows.
It was the 13th time What’s the Use? was ever played, and the first time in 74 shows.
Tela hadn’t been played in 238 shows.
Rocky Top hadn’t been played in 86 shows.
Sand hadn’t been played in 40 shows and it was the third time since 2000.
It was the 23rd time The Curtain (With) was ever played, and only the 10th time since the 1980s.
Lifeboy hadn’t been played in 54 shows.
HYHU > Love you > HYHU hadn’t been played in 65 shows, and it included a vacuum solo by a member of the audience, Rich, who later got Fish’s vacuum as a present. It also featured pretty spectacular drumming by Trey Anastasio.
Frankenstein had not been played in 31 shows.
So overall this was a present from Phish to all of us in attendance, busting out songs they hadn’t played in, literally, years. Great, great, great, great.
Last Friday.
Jeff Beck (not the real one - the Baton Rouge native), Peter Simon, Jacob Mulkey, Barrett Black, Della.
The last two were great. The first one… not so much.

At the Republic in New Orleans. This is three days late. I had never seen Deer Tick. I liked them. Neko Case was amazing. We were front row and center thanks to Jade who made us be first in line.

Glad I didn’t stay home.

Saw people read poetry and short stories. There was also music:
Luke Ash: great.
Prom date: almost great.
Della: great.
Jacob Zachary: phenomenal.
Some folk singing girls: pretty decent.
Some other dude who learned one blues scale and wrote a political song: awful.
